I can't provide any information about Captain Whitney. I only encountered Heart's Desire once. A Google search brings up a 1925 Alden Schooner named Heart's Desire. There is a nice photo of her that I now have as my computer's desktop. She is listed in the American Schooner Association record https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pG_hP8gKcFxyrtskTxlnJTA. The vessel in the picture has a helm wheel. The one I sailed had a tiller. The Captain is listed as a Lifetime Commodore in the Seven Seas Cruising Association http://ssca.org/cgi-bin/pagegen.pl?pg=awards/award_lifetime_commodores&title=Lifetime%20Commodores.

I saw that you got interested in sailing by meeting up with the Heart's Desire in Ocean City, MD. I am writing because that is how I feel in love with sailing too.

Howard Whitney was the owner in 1966. He allowed me to sail with him each day (in the summer) for the next three years.

Do you know anything about what happen to the Heart's Desire or Cap't Whitney?

I remember a Pelican called Old Time Song, and a lovely craft at that. Certainly there could be few of anything afloat that was ever built with less loving care or heart....

That said, I think you've likely been a cranky guy all your life.

hang in there. poverty is not all it's cracked up to be but anyone with the desire and gumption to acquire and renovate an old boat can find a way to do so. Watch the auctions on ebay, there are some real bargains. building from scratch will be a lot more expense than refitting a classic, but the rewards would no doubt be great. best of luck.

Thank you for commenting. Enjoy your cruise. I love to hear of people getting out on the water. With all the great work you've done on Good Old Boat you certainly are entitled to some rewarding recreation on the water. We will all be looking forward to hearing about your travels on the podcast and in the magazine.

I'm wishing you luck, Chris! Thanks for the kind mention in your blog. Please keep us posted as you pursue the dream. This summer Jerry and I will be cruising for 12 weeks. (This is our first big sailing adventure of that duration. We're looking forward to it.) So I'll be generally out of touch but would welcome occasional updates nonetheless. You're pursuing what we call "the affordable dream" and that dream isn't accomplished without a little (or a lot) of elbow grease and enthusiasm to make up for the minimal investment. Go for it!
